LOCKPORT FIRE DISPATCH

The Lockport Fire Board yesterday endorsed a
plan to transfer fire dispatching duties to the
Police Department. The final decision on whether
to give them the job, or to the Sheriff's Department,
will be up to the Common Council. Both say they can
do it at no additional cost. The Cities Professional
Firefighters Association gave the City a six month
window to make the switch in their new contract.

BARN FIRE

Investigators are trying to figure out what
started a blaze in a barn at 4073 Root Road
in Royalton around 5:30 this morning. Four
fire companies, Gasport, Terry's Corners,
Hartland, and Middleport, were on the scene
for several hours. The fire was reported by
a resident living in a mobile home behind
the structure. He said he heard a crackling

AMERICA'S DUMBEST CRIMINAL

A 39 year old Lockport man is awaiting extradition
back to the City to be sentenced on charges he
assaulted a pizzeria owner in November 2008
outside a West Avenue bar. Christopher Crego
was found in Terre Haute, Indiana as a result of
all the postings he made on social networking sites.
One of them was a local newspaper article calling
him one of this area's Ten Most Wanted. Crego
also faces charges levelled last August of DWI,
possession of marijuana, improper lane use,
and failure to keep right. He's also wanted in
Buffalo where police say he shot four sparrows
and a sea gull with a large BB gun last July, killing
two of the sparrows. Lockport Detective Captain
Rick Podgers says he's thinking of nominating him
for America's Dumbest Criminal. He says they
found everything they needed to catch him, even
his work address, on social networking sites.

LOOKING FOR MONEY

Falls Mayor Paul Dyster called on the New York
Power Authority Thursday to establish a dedicated
funding stream to fuel long term economic recovery
and new jobs for residents. Dyster suggested they
should provide $100-million to capitalize on advancing
the tourism sector and core city re-development and
another $20-million to stimulate the re-emergence
of the city's green manufacturing sector. He said
the Authority had a $309-million surplus in 2008 and
75 per cent of it was directly attributible to the Niagara
Power Project. He said some of the money should be
used to build a quality destination tourism project for
the area that can compliment, as well as, compete
with Ontario.

a rifle held up a pizza deliveryman just after
midnight Thursday in front of a home in the
1300 block of Ashland Avenue. The 25th

first degree robbery and petit larceny. He
allegedly took $54 from the driver. He said

LOCKPORT TO POSSIBLY CLOSE ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Lockport School Chief Terry Ann Carbone told
the School Board last night budget problems
might cause them to close one elementary school
next year. She said they're facing a cut of
$3.9-million in state aid on top of $4-million in
increased costs. She would not give the name of
the school under consideration but said she would
be meeting with the faculty there soon. Carbone
said they might also have to eliminate 23 jobs
including Adminstrators, teachers and staff, make
cuts to supplies, and eliminate some BOCES programs.
School Board President Marietta Schrader said many
of the job cuts would be handled by attrition. She
also said there would also have to be a tax increase.

PALADINO TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR

Buffalo attorney and developer Carl Paladino is
thinking about running for Governor. Tea New
York leader Russ Thompson says he had
a two hour lunch with him and by the end
Paladino was convinced it was his patriotic
duty to run. He says they're looking at several
options. One would be to compete in the GOP
primary against Rick Lazio, another would
be to run on a Tea Party line, and next week
he plans to visit with Conservative Party leaders
about a possible endorsement and he plans to
call Tom Golisano about the Independence
Party endorsement. Thompson says
they need to get Paladino's name known in
New York City. Paladino is out of town for
the Super Bowl now but Thompson says
strategy sessions will take place as soon as he
gets back.

FURTHER INTO THE RED

The Governor announced Wednesday the state's
budget deficit has grown by another $750-million
to $8.2-billion. Paterson plans to outline his
proposals to address the new shortfall next
Tuesday. He said the latest trouble can be
traced to the backlash against bonuses paid to
fat cats on Wall Street, that their structure and
timing has been delayed. He said many firms
are also giving them in terms of stocks and
you can't tax them until they actually realize
and that's why the state did not get as much
as expected. He also blamed part of it on
additional Medicaid pay-outs. Paterson also
warned lawmakers not to make promises they
cannot keep.

HAMILTON TRIAL BEGINS

The trial of the Falls man accused of shooting his
ex-girlfriend and two police officers last February
started in County Court yesterday with a replaying
of the 9-1-1 call made by a neighbor reporting the
incident. Thirty-five year old Adam Hamilton is
charged with three counts of attempted murder and
another of aggravated criminal contempt. Police
say he hid in the trunk of Stephanie Turk's car,
jumped out when she got to her home on South
Avenue, amd shot her twice in the foot with a rifle
as he tried to force her into the back seat. He
allegedly shot her again on the left side as she
was running across the street. Police officers
Walter Nichols and Michael Bird were wounded
when they responded. The incident was sparked
by Turk's ending of an 11 year relationship.

AMENDOLA & BUTRY

Officials in the Falls said Wednesday a deal is being
worked out between the Mayor and the Council that
would allow Chief Plumbing Inspector George
Amendola and Electrical Inspector Peter Butry to
return to work. There will be restrictions on

administrative leave last July after they were named
as part of a federal investigation into a possible
inappropriate relationship between the Inspections

criminal mischief and another of making grafitti.

A Lockport man and his mother were both charged
with menacing and harassement just after 11:30 last
night following a domestic incident at 131 Gooding.

by her jacket and throwing her down a flight of
stairs. The victim went out on the porch and says
that's when Bolden's 62 year old mother came out
and grabbed her by the neck. Mary Bolden allegedly
then pushed the woman down the porch steps and
grabbed a three foot board with nails on the end. The

was returned to the County Tuesday after he was
captured in Clayton, Alabama. The former resident
of Gabriel Drive plead not guilty to first and second
degree robbery, petit larceny, and second degree
assault before Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza. The
assault charge was levelled because Richardson
was allegedly driving the get away car when it
rammed into a police car operated by Lieutenant
Brian Wentland. He was just getting out when it

ROYALTON

In Royalton Town Court last night, the case against
a 24 year old man accused of driving the pick up
involved in an alleged attempted burglary of an
Akron Road home was adjourned until February 18
for an attorney assignment. Twenty-four year old
Anibel Cordero of the Town of Lockport is charged
with felony second degree attempted burglary. The
homeowner, 63 year old Dennis Cherry, fired 15 shots
at the pick-up January 21 to stop what he thought was
a break-in. He's charged with reckless endangerment
and criminal mischief and will also be in court on the
18th. Cordero told a reporter last night he was only
giving Cherry's stepdaughter a ride home and he got
caught up in a family fued. The stepdaughter, 18 year
old Jenna Zsebhazy, is charged with attempted
burglary. Cordero said he and Zsebhazy are just
friends. He denied suggestions by Cherry and the
State Police that he was a drug user and they were
there to burglarize the home.

WHEATFIELD

Forty year old Joelle Kott plead not guilty to
child endangerment charges last night in
Wheatfield Town court. She's the owner of
Pit Stop Puppy's Dog Rescue & Boarding
Kennel and she was arrested last Friday when
the Sheriff's Department and the SPCA took
47 dogs from the business, a nearby farm, and
her home on Norman Road. That's where
officials said her two year old son and
twelve year old daughter and 18 dogs were
living in deplorable conditions. The Sheriff's
Department also found 21 dogs in an unheated
kennel when temperatures were in the 30's.
They also said there was no water for them and
they were living in their own waste. Eight more
puppies on a nearby farm. A friend of Kott's
told the Buffalo News the dogs and her kids
were the woman's whole life and they had
taken it away from her. Officials said they
believe Kott meant well but the situation got
out of hand. She could face more charges
following a review by the SPCA and the
Sheriff's Department. The SPCA plans to put
the dogs up for adoption.

MEDICAID MONEY FOR COUNTIES

Senator Chuck Schumer touted a provision in the
President's proposed budget yesterday that
would funnel $28-million into Western New York to
help counties pay their Medicaid bills. The cash
would be sent directly to the counties and would
not pass through Albany. Schumer said if it
did not survive the Obama's budget, they would
try to get it included in the Jobs Bill...so Counties
might see the money as soon as this Spring or
in the next fiscal year that starts in October. Schumer
called the proposed budget a mixed bag for New
York, noting that money for the Great Lakes had
been cut and he did not think the school funding
formula would be well received by adminstrators,
and that law enforecement cash had also been
eliminated.

COUNTY LEGISLATURE

The County Legislature's Economic Development
Committee agreed last night to back a request for
tax exempt status for the Hope VI housing project
in the Falls..but they want officials from the Falls
Housing Authority to come to the next meeting
of the Legislature on February 16. Lawmakers want
to know why they need $2-million more than the
$16-million in tax exempt bonds the County IDA
granted them in 2007. IDA staff member Larry
Witul said the bondholders have changed and they
have to re-issue them. He said the cost went up
because of delays caused by required environmental
remediation. The session also included the annual
report by the Chairman of the Economic Development
Committee. Rick Updegrove said the County made
gains in 2009 despite the recession. He said they
focused on creating and capitalizing on opportunites,
strengthening outreach initiatives, closing deals band
seeing tangible results in terms of capital investment
and job creation, securing funds for local projects
through stimulus funds, and planning for the future.
He said 2009 saw the birth of the Opportrunity Zone
Program, the continuation of the highly successful
Empower Niagara program, and the kick-off a new
funding program for brownfield remediation. Updegrove
said Empower Niagara had resulted in the creation and
retention of over 500 jobs and private investment
of over $10-million. He said they needed to concentrate
on outreach and retention activities in order to keep
and strenghten the companies that call the County
it's home. The Legislature also o-k'd an ad hoc
committee's reccomendation that the County Historical
Society should receive $176,000 in Greenway money
to house a collection at the Erie Canal Discovery Center
that was donated by Charles Rand Penney. The funding
must sill be approved by the Host Communities standing
committee of the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

DYSINGER ROAD VICTIM SAID TO BE BLIND

The Sheriff's Department says the 44 year old
woman who struck by a snowplow Monday
night on Dysinger Road was legally blind.
Investigators also say Joyce Garvey had been
drinking before the accident. Her son said he
didn't think alcohol was a factor though and
says poor lighting on the road was a major
factor. He wonders why the plow driver did
not see his mother. Garvey would have
celebrated her 45th birthday today.

FLIGHT 3407

The National Transportation Safety Board said
yesterday pilot error was the probable cause of
last year's crash of Flight 3407 in Clarence. Chair
Deborah Hersman said the accident casts doubt
as to whether regional airlines are held to the same
safety standards as the major carriers. She promised
the Board would pursue the issue. She also
criticized the FAA for taking too long to address
safety problems raised by the crash.

NEW ATTORNEYS

Three of the four attorneys representing the
alleged killers of Lockport youth counselor
Renee Greco were removed from the case
Monday. Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza
made the move following Robert Thousand's
allegation that a fellow inmate in the jail...
Thomas Pryor...told him he had killed Ahkenya
Johnson of Niagara Falls in January 2009.
Thousand was being represented by Mike
McNellis who also represented Robert Johnson.
He was sentenced to 25 to year last week for
killing the woman, who was his wife, and
McNellis plans an appeal. Sperrazza cited
a conflict of interest and removed McNellis,
Robert Viola, and Rodney Giove from the case.
Earl Key, who was helping McNellis, will
continue to represent the other teen accused
of killing Greco, Anthony Allen. Buffalo attorney
Joseph Terranova, was assigned to Thousand.

Day is Friday. WLVL will be on hand for a live
remote in the afternoon.

TOWN OF LOCKPORT

Following a work session yesterday in the Town
of Lockport, Supervisor Marc Smith said no changes
would be made for now in the sign ordinance. Town
Attorney Dan Seaman had proposed an even tougher
law on electronic signs. He wants to expand it to
include any sign that could be changed by remote
means including time and temperature boards. The
proposal was among 52 amendments Seaman
proposed to the Zoning ordinance. The Town currently
bans any sign from changing more than once every
ten minutes. It's the law that auto repair shop owner
Dave Mongiello is accused of violating. Smith said
about a half dozen of Seaman's other suggestions
are being changed at the board's request.

in the arms, chest, and back. He said he didn't
know it until he noticed the bleeding and had
to get stitches on his shoulder.

advisor to President Ronald Reagan. He served
as the Associate Director for Economics and
Planning in the Office of Management and

He says if Scott Brown can win in Massachusetts
anything is possible.

For the first time ever in the history of
North Tonawanda varsity baseball, the team
is going to Florida for Spring training camp.
Boosters Club President Katie Puscheck
tells WLVL they're going to the Coco Expo
April 17-22nd. They'll be staying in dorms
and they'll practice and play some games.
Puscheck says they've been saving cash for
a year to pay for it, but they only have a third
of what's needed, and they're hoping to raise
the rest at an Alumni Dinner February 25
at Pane's Restaurant. The cost of the dinner
is being paid for by a local businessman so
all the proceeds can go to the team. They'll
also be asking attendees for support to
make the trip possible. Former NT baseball
players can contact her at 636-5480, or by
e-mail at Katie Puscheck @ Yahoo.com
Dinner reservations are due by February 16.

MONGIELLO TO HOLD DINNER DANCE FUNDRAISER

Town of Lockport auto repair shop owner
Dave Mongeillo is planning a fundraising
dinner dance later this month. He says he's
holding the event because the Town won't let
him advertise community events on his disputed
electronic sign. He says the dinner dance is
to raise awareness of the fundraisers that are
held by residents for a variety of causes...people
that need help caring for elderly parents, kids
needing surgery, funds to pay for transportation
to get to the hospital etc. He says he and wife
like to help. The dance will help pay for advertising
the events. The dinner dance is planned for
February 20 in the Farm & Home Center at the
Fairgrounds. Tickets are $30 and the music
will be by disc jockey Bill Carpenter. Mongeillo
says none of what's raised will be used to pay his
own legal bills racked up in his fight with the Town.

LAWSUIT

The mother of a Wheatfield man who hanged himself
in the County Jail last year has filed a wrongful death
suit. Denise Skrzypek accuses the Sheriff's department
of negligence and gross recklessness for letting her
21 year old son Joshua be alone in a regular cell
containing a laundry bag on January 16, 2009. He had
been arrested that morning and charged with robbing
a Noco station on Williams Road in Wheatfield while
armed with a black paintball gun. The suit maintains he
had unspecified mental problems. The Sheriff's department
says he also had drug problems and cited an incident
in the Falls in December 2008. Skrzypek allegedly ran
from the Medical Center dressed in a hospital gown
while he was still hooked up to intravenous lines. Police
say he was later found in his car high on heroin.

DEPUTY AWARD

A deputy in the County Sheriff's office will be
one of the recipients of a 2009 Heroes Award
from the 100 Club of Buffalo. Deputy Roger

It happened last August 29 as he was responding
to a head on crash on South Transit Road in
the Town of Lockport. Schreader found
Charlotte Cescon trapped in her vehicle with
severe injuries. He also noticed the car was
burning so he broke out the drivers window
with a fire extenguisher and cut the seat belt
and safely removed her moments before the
entire car burst into flames. Both voutour and
Assisatant DA Theodore Brenner say 45 year old
Charlene Cescom would not have survived
if it were not for Schreader's bravery and quick

responders who demonstrate an act of service
above and beyond the call of duty. Schreader
will receive the award at 6pm February 26
at the Country Club of Buffalo in Williamsville.

able to save the family's golden retreiver. The
cause is under investigation. Another blaze
at 212 Starr Street in Medina around 7:30
destroyed a two story wood frame home .
It was reported by an off duty fire captain
who lives less than a block away. A large
column of thick black smoke was reported
along with flames shooting more than 20
feet into the air. Officials say the home was
heated with propane and the tanks caused the
fire to spread rapidly. No one was home at the
time. Three homes on nearby Orient Street
and another on Starr sustained heat exposure
as well as some interior smoke and water
damage.
