DELPHI

An attorney for Delphi says talks will continue
over the holiday weekend between the company
and members of the President's Automotive
Task Force. Jack Butler says they're discussing
a plan to lift the company out of bankruptcy
protection by a court imposed June 2 deadline.
He said seperate sessions are being held
before Judge Cecila Morris. Butler said he
expected they would be able to supply more
information on future steps when Delphi
returns to the bankruptcy court next Friday.
Delphi's fate continues to be tied up with that
of General Motors. They could file for
bankruptcy if they're unable to meet their
own June 1 deadline to cut debt and reduce
labor costs. Such a move could mean they
would not be able to provide Delphi with the
money they need.

FLIGHT 3407

The US House of Representatives yesterday
approved an amendment introduced by three
of our local representatives. It calls for an
independent, comprehensive review of
commercial airline pilot training programs.
Congressman Chris Lee told the House the
crew of Flight 3407 was not adequately trained
to execute maneuvers that would have
prevented the tragedy. The amendment was
included in the FAA Reauthorization Act of
2009. It would instruct the General Accounting
Office to conduct a thorough investigation of
all commercial airline pilot training and
certifictaion programs.... including the standards
the FAA uses for such programs, how quickly
air carriers update and train pilots on new
technologies, and what warning technologies
are in place to signal impending danger. Louise
Slaughter and Brian Higgins signed on as
co-sponsors. Lee also passed along a message
frpm Kevin Kuwik, who lost his girlfriend
in the crash. He's been speaking on behalf
of the families. Kuwiks saying they've struggled to
come to terms over the past three months with
the fact that this tragic accident was seemingly
very preventable. He said this action represents
an important step into making sure that all pilots
are trained to the highest level possible especially
in the critical areas of stall recovery and cold weather
operations.

SNOW PARK

Workers are putting the finishing touches
on the new Snow Park on Niagara Street
in the Falls and it's expected to open June
15. The year round attraction will feature a
49 foot snow tubing hill and a synthetic
ice rink that's nearly the same size as
those used in the National Hockey
League. The park will emply about 70
full time and 30 part time workers.

CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES

Two more members of the Lockport Common
Council announcing plans to run for another
term in November. Third ward representative
Flora McKenzie said she wants to continue her
work with the city's youth, provide input for the
new parking ramp, make sure a sidewalk gets
installed at Outwater Park, and work on other
projects they've started. She said she enjoys
working for the community. It would be her
third term if she's re-elected. Second ward
alderwoman Amanda Alexander also announced
her intention to seek a second term. She says
the Council has come a long way in addressing
some of the distressed portions of the City and
the fruits of their labor are noticeable. Alexander
says the experience gained during her first term
has prepared her to do an even better job in the
next two years.

MILD EARTHQUAKE

The US Geological Survey says there was a
minor earthquake just after 11am yesterday
in Pendleton. The magnitude 1.9 quake was
detected about five miles south southwest of
Lockport at 11:01am. The agency's measurements
indicate the earth moved about 1.2 miles beneath
the surface. The epicenter was at the intersection
of Bear Ridge and Fiegle Roads. Officials said
the smallest quake that can be felt by people
is a magnitude 3, about ten times more
powerful than a magnitude 1.9.

symptoms are much the same as with the regular
seasonal flu.

The State Labor Department reported yesterday
the County's unemployment rate fell below ten
per cent in April. It dipped to 9.9 per cent. It
had been 10.8 per cent in March. A similiar
drop was reported for Orleans County where
it had been 10.9 per cent in March. It fell to
9.5 per cent last month. Officials cautioned
unemployment rates typically drop from March
to April as seasonal businesses start up. They
said the area had fewer jobs this April than it
has had in any April since 1996.

CLAIMS TO BE FILED IN THE FALLS

Ten residents of LaSalle whose homes were
damaged by the water main break in March
are planning to file notices of claim today
against the Niagara Falls Water Board. They're
members of the Evershed Block Club. About
15 more members are expected to file claims
in the next few weeks. An estimated 11 million
gallons of water flooded the area around
Frontier Avenue near 56th Street when the
20 inch main broke March 23. Several residents
told the Board last night their insurance
companies have rejected their claims. The
Water Board says they have already gotten
nine notices of claim.

CHILLE RESPONDS

County SPCA Director Al Chille responded to
criticisms levelled against him in a statement
he released Thursday. Chille said there is
always room for improvement and several of
the issues are worthy of future discussion. He
plans to meet with a few of the members of the
Board in the very near future to hear their
suggestions, and said residents can be
assured those that have merit will be implemented.
The President of the Board told Greater Niagara
Newspapers it is not his responsibility to
micromanage the organization...and that
Chille did the right thing by locking non members
out of the building during Wednesday night's
annual meeting, He said they had business to
do. SPCA member Donna Kelch said she is not
thrilled with the operation but she's not totally
unhappy with it either. She said Chille is doing
as good a job as he can.

SAVE AMERICA RALLY

UAW Region 9 director Joe Ashton defended
the benefits union retirees receive during
yesterday's "Save America" rally in front of the
Lockport Delphi plant. He said they built this
country and fought it's wars and lashed out
at companies moving their manufacturing to
foreign lands. Lockport Mayor Mike Tucker
said our economy won't recover if he continue
to ship good paying jobs overseas. He said he
had worked in building 8 for 30 years and
it was his honor to serve the "local" as an
elected officer for 24 years. He said he
knew where his bread is buttered and is
still a dues paying member of the union. Buffalo
Mayor Byron Brown said everytime someone in
our community loses a manufacturing job we
are all hurt in some way.

STARPOINT

An 11 year old Starpoint student was presented
with a certificate and a check for $750 yesterday
for producing the third best video in the country
in a contest sponsored by C-SPAN. Michael
Pyskaty was honored aboard the CSPAN Civics
bus which visited the school yesterday morning.
The boy said he had worked on the video for
two months. It was about the state of the Lockport
Delphi plant and featured interviews with State
Senator George Maziarz, Mayor Mike Tucker,
and Starpoint School Chief Doug Whalen. His
grandparents and mom and dad were there for
the presentation. CSPAN showed the top 27

Corners, Wolcottsville, Gasport, and South
Lockport fought the blaze which originated
on the back deck of the home. No damage
estimate was provided and the cause is
under investigation.

AL CHILLE

About 30 people concerned about the County
SPCA's apparent lack of response to some
animal welfare complaints were locked out of
the building last night during the agency's
annual meeting. Director Al Chille is accused
of ignoring 17 complaint calls from Hartland
in January that ultimately resulted in the
starvation death of a horse. A staff member
also told the Buffalo News her hours were cut
to almost nothing after she wrote a letter critical
of the operation. She said Chille cut the

temperature in the dog kennel to as low as 53
degrees in the Winter to save money, that the
agency's cat kennels are outdated, and that they
ran out of disposable gloves and he didn't buy
any for two months. Chille agreed to meet soon

led the agency for 28 years.

the Courts from the rest of the building.
Meantime, that parking ticket amnesty

at cost with no late fees providing they

food for local pantries. The Council o-k'd
a $78,000 contract for the Flight of Five.
As expected, it went to BVR Construction of
Rochester. Lawmakers also agreed to spend
$450 to repair the skateboard park.

NO CASH

will not provide funding for a proposed store
at 79 Canal Street in Lockport that would sell
goods produced in the County. They voted
6-4 Tuesday not to support the Canalside
Wine Emporium. The project....proposed by
Jack Martin of "Beautiful Vision," is still
expected to move forward. Mayor Mike Tucker
says the Greater Lockport Development
Corporation might spend $100,000 of it's
own money to fix up the building and then
sell it to Martin. The Commission approved
nine other projects including ones to improve
access and safety at the Cave of the Winds,
a stair replacement program at Artpark, and
an operations plan for the Niagara Falls State
Park.

data center on Route 31 near Comstock Road.
The other is in the Town of Lockport Industrial
Development Park off Junction Road. The other
is in Genesee County near Exit 48A in Pembroke.
A site in Orleans County has been taken out of
consideration. He says the two spots in Niagara
County are more shovel-ready. The operation would
bring 125 high tech jobs at an average annual salary
of $65,000. Maziarz says Yahoo's very prescence
could draw other high tech companies to the area.

up on the 9th, a trial will tentatively begin
June 20.

County's casino money. Lawmakers also voted to
create ten social service worker positions to deal
with a surge in new applications due to the economy.
They'll also add two clerks and a supervisor. All of
the cost, about $368,000, will be paid for with
stimulus money. The positions will be re-evaluated

before McNulty's announcement, former NT
councilmember Russ Rizzo issued a release
saying he would seek her seat in the Fall. The
former Democrat is now registered as an
independent voter. He said the controversy
over a legislator's residency is another indication
of what's wrong with politics in Niagara County.
He said even if McNulty is legally maintaining
her residence in NT, it's clear part of her time
is spent in Pendleton and NT deserves a legislator
committed full-time to our community. Rizzo said
he did his best to do what was right during his
8 years on the Council and now he's decided to
try to do the same thing in the County legislature.
