PFEIFFER FOODS TO CLOSE IN WILSON

Most of the 156 workers at Pfeiffer Foods
in Wilson will be out of a job by mid October
and the remainder will be let go just before
Thanksgiving. The company announced
Thursday they would permanently shut down
the facility at 683 Lake Street by November 20
but only 40 workers will still be there after the
middle of October. The plant makes salad
dressing. Town Supervisor Joe Jastrzemski
said he and Village Mayor Callahan would be
meeting with the company at 10am Friday to
find out more. He said the announcement
came as complete surprise., noting they
moved out the commercial line in 2007...
and that meetings were held then to try to
get them low cost power but they never took
advantage of it. Pfeiffer is the second largest
employer in the Village and Town after the
School District. Workers were told of the
decision at a meeting Thursday morning. The
plant is a division of the Marzetti Company
and is the speciality foods subsidiary of the
Lancaster Colony Corporation of Columbus,
Ohio. They saw the Wilson operations will be
absorbed into two plants they own in Columbus
and Horse Cave, Kentucky.

LOCKPORT BUDGET

Work is progressing on the City of Lockport's
budget for next year. Mayor Mike Tucker says
lawmakers are facing a challenging situation
because sales tax revenue is down in the
County and that's something they rely on
quite heavily in the budget and it will have
an impact. The Council has been listening
to the wants and needs of department heads
for the past couple of weeks. It's called
the wish list but Tucker says the general
fund is approaching $23-million and there are
a lot of things they want the City will not be
able to afford. He does urge people to call
him or their alderman about what they think
about the proposed recycling program. He
said they'll put it in the budget to start but
it may be eliminated when they get down
to passage in October. Tucker says they
are about 25% of the way through the budget
process. They hope to pass the spending
plan at the first meeting in October.

City is one of 33 in the nation to be designated
as a Playful City by KaBoom Incorporated of

was concerned there may not be enough parking
spots. Assuming they figure that out, the owners
say another tenant will be sought for the remaining
space. Meantime, the owners of the building that's
occupied by Metro Mattress and Signworks presented
a plan to put up a 6400 square foot building next
door. Alix Development says it'll be shared by two
tenants who have already signed committments.

to get some work done on removing part

Paul Dyster said It would be
used to remove and reconfigure sections
within a limited geographic scope...on
the North it would cover the section from
Main Street to Findlay Drive where the
parkway runs directly parallel to Whirlpool
Street. Those would be consolidated into
a single scenic boulevard. The other
work would reconfigure the Southern
segment between John P Daly Boulevard
and Prospect Street. Dyster said the City
should know if it'll get the money sometime
in October. City Controller Maria Brown also
told the Council she had borrowed $1.4-million
to start a reconstruction on half of 72nd
Street. Dyster said the work would start
at the downstream end because there are
sewer problems that have to be addressed
on that end. He said the objective was to get
as far as Stephenson and perhaps as far as
Frontier. The City is also looking for a new
engineer after Ali Marzban's departure last
month. Human Resources Director Joyce
Mardon-Sierriani said they had placed ads
August 30 in the Gazette and Buffalo News
and their affiliated web sites. Applications
are being accepted till Friday. Thirteen
people have applied so far and at this
point, some look like qualified applicants.
The job pays $90,000 a year. Dyster said
the company that found Marzban after a national
search would provide more candidates for free
since Marzban did not work out. He said he asked
them to try to find people from this area as he
assured lawmakers the residency rule would
be enforced.

DOUCETT SAYS DEMLER INVADED HIS PRIVACY

Wheatfield Supervisor Tim Demler is denying an
allegation by Councilman Gil Doucett that he
and Town Clerk Kathy Herrington invaded
his privacy by going into his water department
history. Doucett's release indicated that
Herrington, with the assistance of the
Town Attorney, had looked into an incorrect
entry which had been posted on an estimated
bill and corrected over ten years ago. He says
Demler has done it several times , last year
around November and again last week. He
says Demler was going to use it to say he had
stolen $2,000 worth of water. Demler says
an independent auditor discovered the mistake
on Doucett's bill and he never looked at it , nor
mentioned it to anyone, but
passed it onto the Town Attorney. He also
says water bills are public record and anybody
could ask for any of it, but says "We didn't."

the Kentucky Fried Chicken on West Avenue at
gunpoint just after 8:30. David Nelson is charged
with two counts of first degree robbery and one
count of second degree assault and additional

TOBACCO FEES

Lawmakers return to Albany Thursday and State
Senator Bill Stachowski is sponsoring a bill to
scale back the 900 per cent increase in fees charged
to tobacco retailers under the recently passed
State budget. The increase was seen as a public
health initiative with the theory being fewer places
to buy tobacco would lead to a reduction in
smoking. Stachowksi says that was bad policy,
bad thinking, and bad accounting. He said the
State will see less revenue and it will drive more
smokers to unlicensed, untaxed sources. He also
says it will lead to fewer stores and less places to
buy lottery tickets.

Boulevard in the Falls over the weekend after the

will be here in person while former House Speaker

house and was going to take his own life. Workers
on the hotline kept him on the phone while

The County Board of Elections will hold a
demonstration in Royalton tomorrow of their new
electronic voting machines. Republican Elections

in the general election in November. The County
has already bought 125 of them and has another
125 on order. The cost was paid for under the
federal Help America To Vote act. The Board

for several days this week for absentee voting.
